The study of government offers a rich mixture of the ideal and the
real, of values frequently in conflict with each other and with
practical obstacles that stand in their way. These interactions
confront us every day as individuals, as citizens of our nation,
and as members of the global community.
Ohio Wesleyan offered a course in political science in 1845, three
years after the University was founded, and established its department
of politics and government in 1917. From its inception, the department
has emphasized the practice of politics, paying close attention
to the actual workings of today's political institutions.
The Arneson Institute for Practical Politics
and Public Affairs provides opportunities for students to learn
more about the realities of political life through internships,
apprenticeships, and independent study. In recent years, our majors
have gained practical experience working with legislators, in law
firms and courts, with public interest groups, and with political
campaigns.
The Ohio Wesleyan University Mock Convention
In 1884, Ohio Wesleyan University held its first "Mock Convention". Since 1920, the convention has been held in almost every presidential election year.
The event helps educate participants about the fundamentals of one of the most intriguing U.S. political events, the presidential nominating convention. The Mock Convention also informs participants about the candidates and key issues in the upcoming election.
